Prince George’s County Memorial Library System services for incarcerated and reentering individuals.
Thursday May 7, 2026 8:30am - 10:30am EDT
This program highlights the collaboration pipeline between the Prince George’s County Memorial Library System’s (PGCMLS) County Correctional Center and its workforce and community development team, along with community partners to serve those who are incarcerated or returning to society. Our wrap - around network aims to meet the needs of the population by addressing key barriers, such as access to job resources, career fairs, business development referrals, credit repair tools, legal resources, social service referrals (drug and alcohol, housing, food, and healthcare services, etc.), educational, financial, and digital literacy. We provide a community-oriented approach to prevent recidivism and rebuild life after incarceration.

AI Ethics Library Instruction and Educational Autonomy
Thursday May 7, 2026 10:45am - 11:45am EDT
Educators are often told that Generative AI is here to stay, and that it is better to adapt to (and adopt) these new technologies rather than be left behind. The next generation will be the ones to shape our technological world, though, not the marketing departments of a few present-day companies—and our students need to be empowered to say no to unethical uses of technology. This session describes a pathway for librarians to involve themselves in AI ethics education and demonstrates what it looks like to talk to students about technology as a question of autonomy.

Practical Intellectual Freedom Strategies for Front Line Workers
Thursday May 7, 2026 10:45am - 11:45am EDT
As book challenges and censorship attempts intensify, library staff at every level - particularly those on the front lines - find themselves navigating increasingly complex conversations about access, diversity, and community values related to library resources. This session moves beyond general overviews of intellectual freedom to focus on practical, actionable strategies for responding to real-world situations while staying true to the ethical foundations of librarianship. Drawing upon resources (United Against Book Bans, PEN America) and advocacy efforts (Authors Against Book Bans, American Library Association’s Office for Intellectual Freedom), this program equips participants with tools to confidently, ethically, and effectively address challenges. Through guided discussion, scenario analysis, and reflective dialogue, attendees will explore how to uphold intellectual freedom in both principled and pragmatic ways.

Using evidence-based decision making and a participatory process, we were able to get staff buy in and successfully pivot on a short timeline. Our Shared Shelves: How Collaborative Outreach Unlocks the Full Story of Our Communities
Thursday May 7, 2026 3:00pm - 4:00pm EDT
This session presents an innovative outreach model building shared communities through cross-sector partnerships with campus departments, public libraries, and high schools. We create a seamless service continuum, ensuring a student's story is supported from pre-college to graduation. By featuring familiar collections, like Young Adult (YA) works, we build familiarity. The academic library visits for high school students specifically normalize the space. This mutually beneficial approach expands all partners' reach, directly supporting student success initiatives crucial for campus recruitment and retention.

Reading Buddies: An Innovative Approach to Addressing the Community's Reading Crisis
Thursday May 7, 2026 3:00pm - 4:00pm EDT
In response to the community’s reading crisis, Cecil County Public Library developed Reading Buddies, a literacy initiative where trained volunteers are partnered with elementary students to provide 1:1 reading support. Students work with volunteers to build and practice reading skills, gain confidence, and develop a shared love of reading. Due to its success, CCPL used LSTA funding to create a Tool Kit so Reading Buddies can be easily replicated in any community. Participants will learn how Reading Buddies addresses the reading crisis, get a “sneak peek” of the Tool Kit, and learn more about piloting Reading Buddies in the future.

Managing the Mess: Leading from the Middle When Everything is Hard
Thursday May 7, 2026 4:15pm - 5:15pm EDT
Caution: Do not take this advice. Everything here comes from people still figuring it out, making mistakes, and occasionally hiding in the supply closet. Middle management during polycrisis means navigating impossible expectations from above while supporting exhausted teams below. This session embraces the mess and understanding that authentic leadership isn't about having answers, but about showing up honestly when everything is on fire. We'll talk about showing up authentically when you don't have solutions, supporting others while barely keeping it together yourself, and why pretending everything is fine helps no one. Come ready for honest conversation about what it actually takes to lead with humanity during genuinely difficult times.

Our Files, Our Selves: Digital Maryland, the DPLA, and the Power of Access
Thursday May 7, 2026 4:15pm - 5:15pm EDT
Digital Maryland serves as the state’s service hub for the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA), connecting local and community collections to a national audience. This session explores how partnerships among libraries, archives, and community groups expand accessibility and discoverability of Maryland’s digital heritage. Attendees will learn how DPLA aggregation enhances visibility, fosters collaboration, and supports preservation of diverse voices. Recent collections—from small community archives to large institutional partners—will be highlighted to demonstrate best practices for metadata, rights statements, and inclusive description that ensure materials are both findable and meaningful within a larger digital ecosystem.
